Protecting consumers is Ofgem’s first priority. They do this by promoting competition, wherever appropriate, and regulating the monopoly companies which run the gas and electricity networks.
Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR)
www.berr.gov.uk
BERR’s central purpose is to help ensure business success in an increasingly competitive world. It is the voice for business across Government. It leads the Government’s drive to raise UK levels of productivity, create the conditions for business success and strengthen the economic performance of all the regions.
Defra (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) is a UK Government Department. The overarching challenge for Defra is to enable everyone to live within our environmental means. This is most clearly exemplified by the need to:
Tackle climate change internationally and through domestic action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and
Secure a healthy, resilient, productive and diverse natural environment.
The Government has a crucial role in furthering sustainable development through its procurement of goods, services and buildings. With a budget of some £150bn, the public sector can transform markets so that the private sector can join forces in pursuing sustainable purchasing policies.
The Sustainable Procurement Task Force was established in May 2005, charged with drawing up an action plan to bring about a step-change in sustainable public procurement so that the UK is among the leaders in the EU by 2009.
Communities and local government
www.communities.gov.uk
Communities and Local Government is working hard to create thriving, sustainable, vibrant communities that improve everyone's quality of life. To achieve this they are:
- Building more and better homes - and reducing homelessness
- Improving local public services
- Regenerating areas to create more jobs
- Working to produce a sustainable environment
- Trackling anti-social behaviour and extremism
Communities and Local Government sets policy on local government, housing, urban regeneration, planning and fire and rescue. They have responsibility for all race equality and community cohesion related issues in England and for building regulations, fire safety and some housing issues in England and Wales. The rest of their work applies only to England.
